Registration for GMAT™ Focus Edition to Open in August 2023

Free prep materials available two months prior to propel candidates to success on their business school journey

RESTON, Va., May 02, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a global association representing leading business schools, today announced that registration for the GMAT Focus Edition, an updated version of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) exam, will open on August 29, 2023 for testing in the fourth quarter this year. In addition, official GMAT Focus prep materials will be available on mba.com on June 6, 2023, with a free study planner of only six weeks to help test takers stick to a schedule, inform prep activities, and track progress, as well as a free GMAT Focus Official Starter Kit that comes with a sampler of 70 real GMAT questions and two full-length practice exams to help candidates establish performance baseline.

Earlier this year, GMAC introduced GMAT Focus Edition after extensive research efforts involving hundreds of school professionals and an in-depth concept testing with thousands of students globally. The GMAT, the most widely used business school admissions exam in the past seven decades, was redesigned with improved test taking experience and flexible new features to better support candidates of graduate business education. Schools will benefit from it as an improved element in their holistic admissions process.

More efficient, more flexible, and more insightful, in an all-new testing experience

The GMAT Focus Edition will feature three 45-minute sections: Quantitative Reasoning, which examines problem solving skills; Verbal Reasoning, which evaluates critical reasoning and reading comprehension but no longer incorporates sentence correction; and the newly developed Data Insights section, which measures candidates’ data literacy skills and ability to analyze and interpret data and apply it to real-world business scenarios. With these changes and the removal of the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA), it is nearly one hour shorter than the current version of the GMAT and therefore requires less content to prepare. Besides new features that allow test takers to bookmark as many questions as they want, review questions within the remaining section time and change up to three answers per section, and to complete the three sections in any order, the enhanced Official Score Report now offers detailed performance insights that helps them assess strengths and identify focus areas at no additional cost.

New score scale and concordance to help assess candidate competitiveness

The GMAT Focus Edition’s Total Score, ranging from 205 to 805, is based on test taker performance on all three sections of the exam, with each section, ranging from 60 to 90, weighted equally. This change has been made to ensure that test takers and schools can easily distinguish from a GMAT Focus Edition score to the currently available GMAT Exam score, which ranges from 200 to 800. To understand a test taker’s relative competitiveness, one can use the concordance tables available on mba.com that link score distributions between the two versions of the exam by percentile. With the GMAT Focus Edition’s new score scale, percentile rankings deserve the primary attention from test takers and schools when looking to understand the results.

“When comparing scores of GMAT Focus Edition to the current version of the GMAT Exam, we encourage test takers and schools to compare percentile rankings rather than comparing total scores,” stressed Manish Dharia, director of product development at GMAC. “Because the Total Score scale and the score scale distribution have both changed, comparing total scores or section scores from the current version of the exam to the GMAT Focus Edition is not appropriate, accurate, or a meaningful comparison of performance. Scores of 600 and 605 may look similar, but they represent very different performance levels on different skills.”

Additional efforts to facilitate smooth transition and swift adoption

As GMAT Focus Edition rolls out for the remainder of 2023, the current version of the GMAT exam will continue to be available to candidates until early next year to facilitate their in-progress preparation and applications for business school. Also, to that end, the GMAT Focus Edition fees will remain the same as the current GMAT exam.

Outre de nouvelles fonctions permettant aux candidats d’attribuer un signet à autant de questions qu’ils le veulent, de passer en revue des questions pendant le temps restant d’une section, de changer jusqu’à trois réponses par section, et de compléter les trois sections dans n’importe quel ordre, le Rapport de notation officiel amélioré intègre désormais des informations détaillées sur leurs performances qui les aident à évaluer leurs points forts et à identifier les domaines sur lesquels ils doivent se concentrer sans aucun coût supplémentaire.

Expulsion of 7,000 Migrants From Algeria Puts Pressure on Niger

Since January several flows of emigrants expelled by Algerian authorities have been constantly arriving in the town of Assamaka.

Niger Interior Minister Hamadou Amadou Souley fears the emergence of a humanitarian crisis in Assamaka, a town where 7,172 sub-Saharan migrants expelled by Algeria are stranded.

‘Since the beginning of 2023, the expulsions of citizens from Central Africa have acquired a critical dimension due to the limited availability of social services in the area. This strong concentration of emigrants has as a corollary a sharp increase in border crime,’ he said.

The Interior Minister called on the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to speed up the identification process of citizens who opt for the voluntary return programme organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Amadou Souley also asked the IOM to review this programme as it was one of the causes of the ‘avalanches of emigrants who go to Agadez with the sole objective of benefiting from socio-economic reintegration.’

Alkassoum Ibrahim, a member of the Canadian NGO International Emergency Aid Committee (CIUAD), which operates in coordination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), explained that the presence of migrants in Assamaka is due to ‘a lack of resources that IOM is currently facing’.

Since January several flows of emigrants expelled by Algeria have been constantly arriving in this town. The last group to arrive was 710 migrants who have been in a situation of ‘extreme vulnerability’ since they were expelled on April 23.

The local Nigerien authorities consider the arrival of the emigrants a threat to the security of the population of Assamaka, estimated at less than 3,000 inhabitants.

Migrants ‘kill stray animals and attack residents at night to steal their goods,’ said Mahamadou Illa, a resident of Assamaka.

Faced with this situation, the Assamaka authorities established a night military patrol starting at 9:00 p.m. to guarantee the safety of the town.

Board of Governors for Denkyira Kyekyewere SHS inaugurated

A 14-member Board of Governors have been inaugurated for the Denkyira Kyekyewere Senior High School (SHS) in the Central Region to champion quality education and raise the academic standards of the school.

The Board comprises representatives of the Upper Denkyira East Municipal Assembly, the Education Directorate, Old Students Association, Traditional Council, and the PTA as required by law.

The members are Mr Peter Bright Amankrah, Director- General’s representative, Mrs Justine Ivy Apawu, Acting Regional Director of Education, Mr Anthony Takyi, Municipal Director of Education, ACP Baffour Apenteng Nyamekye, and Mrs Emelia Ankomah, historical interest representative.

Others are Mr Frank Danso Oppong and Mr Charles Adu-Poku, Municipal Assembly’s representatives, Mr David Prah and Mr Charles Kwening, Old Students reps, Mr Richard Teye Obodai, Teaching Staff, Mr Patrick

Addae, non-teaching staff, and Madam Christine Mensah, Secretary to the Board.

The school, as part of the inauguration, launched a fund for the construction of a girls’ dormitory to help mitigate the accommodation challenges on campus.

Mrs Appaw, who inaugurated the Board, said it conformed with the Ghana Education Service’s Act and Regulations.

The Board must assume full management and responsibility of the school and work hard to achieve its mandate, she said.

The members must use their influence to improve upon the school’s infrastructure, academic performance and discipline, she said.

Mrs Appaw pledged the Directorate’s commitment to ensuring that the various challenges of the school were resolved to improve service delivery.

Mr William Bart-Plange, the Headmaster of the School, noted that the management and staff were doing their best to transform the school into a place of choice for the municipality, region and Ghana as a whole.

He said the Board would champion discipline, academic excellence and development of the school and appealed for the construction of

students and teachers’ quarters to resolve the accommodation issues that remained a major challenge on campus.

He called for the support of all stakeholders towards raising funds to construct the girls’ dormitory to ensure effective teaching and learning and urged the GES to post specialised tutors to the school.

On behalf of the Board, Mr Amankrah thanked the school for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to use their expertise to develop it.

He said the Board was ready to receive ideas, expert advice and support from stakeholders to ensure growth.

The gathering was treated to splendid performances by the school’s cadet, cultural troop, and some poetry recitals.

ECG Krobo District and others fix roads in Yilo Krobo

On May Day, staff from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Krobo District, joined forces with their military counterparts to repair certain roads in the Yilo Krobo Municipality as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

Mr. Eric Tetteh, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), together with personnel, also assisted the ECG/Military team in fixing potholes on the Djaba road and the Somanya-Dodowa route.

They made use of limestone obtained by the ECG from the Odugblase Limestone Mines.

Ms. Sakyiwaa Mensah, Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Tema Regional Officer, informed the Ghana News Agency that her organisation, opted to participate in the humanitarian activity as part of the May Day celebrations.

Ms. Mensah noticed that the potholes made driving slower, which they decided to help make it motorable.

She recounted that after months of stress and discontent, the National Security deployed the military in 2022 to assist the ECG in introducing prepaid meters for customers within the jurisdiction.

She said the process had been effective so far, with most consumers having their meters changed to prepaid, but that a mop-up operation was still in progress to verify that all customers were using the prepaid.

Even though residents were concerned about the use of military engineers, she stated that there has been a cordial relationship between the residents and the ECG and the military team, adding that they had some games with stakeholders some months prior to the road’s repair and hope for many more of such activities soon.

The MCE expressed his delight at the exercise, saying he was glad that the military officers did not let those who intervened in their coming to Krobo land but instead engaged in such social responsibility activities to make life a lot easier for the people.

He expressed delight at the prepayment exercise went successfully, as he was convinced that for the assembly to fulfil its goal of strengthening the local economy, stable electricity supply was required, which could only be delivered through ECG rather than generators and other sources of power.

He said except from individuals who had wiring concerns, the inhabitants of Krobo land could attest to the utility of the prepaid meters, and so appreciated the ECG and military for keeping their promise.

The MCE, on the other hand, has asked the ECG and the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) to consider eliminating the GHs840 cost of getting separate meters to allow individuals living in communal residences to do so.
