AMNESTY INT’NAL CALLS FOR PROBE INTO ATTACK ON LESOTHO JOURNALIST

Amnesty International has called on the authorities in Lesotho to urgently launch an independent and impartial investigation into the attack of Lesotho Times Editor Lloyd Mutungamiri.

Mutungamiri is in a critical condition in hospital after unknown gunmen shot him on Saturday night.

Amnesty said in a statement here Tuesday that those responsible should be brought to book to ensure that journalists worked freely in Lesotho.

Journalists at Lesotho Times said Mutungamiri’s shooting had left them fearing for their lives.

Mutungamiri was charged with criminal defamation in September 2014 for reporting on police corruption. He was also questioned with another reporter last month on a story about an exit package for controversial army commander Tlali Kamoli.

The Amnesty International call came following one by the Lesotho chapter of the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) which also called for prompt investigations into the shooting.
