Liberia: ‘Liberia Will Feed Itself’

By Alloycious David

Presidential hopeful, Dr. Jeremiah Z. Whapoe has disclosed that Liberia would become a major rice production country when he is elected in 2017.

Dr. Whapoe, a member for Vision for Liberia Transformation (VOLT) said he would transform the country through agriculture.

Speaking at the Center for the Promotion of Intellectual Development on Carey Street, Dr. Whapoe said with the help of the National Legislature he would establish an agriculture battalion in the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), with the sole responsibility of engaging in mechanized farming across the country.

According to him, the introduction of the agriculture battalion is intended to make Liberia self-reliant in rice production.

He said when elected he would turned farmers and land owners into millionaires through mechanized farming.

Dr. Whapoe promised to recruits car loaders into the proposed AFL agriculture battalion and noted “we will rehabilitate them and make them useful citizens again.”

The presidential aspirant said he sees no reason why Liberia is not able to feed itself with all the abundant of rain forest and swamp land suitable for rice cultivation.

He said it is a shame for Liberians to be importing pepper and peanuts from neighboring Guinea and Mali.

Dr. Whapoe said Liberian farmers are not benefiting because “they keep doing the same thing over and over.”

The presidential aspirant criticized government for doing nothing to change the situation and improve the conditions of farmers.

“We don’t have government here. What we have here is private enterprise. It is not government. Because private enterprises look like the thing we have here, we call government. People who are part of the system get pay just like how those employed at companies get salaries”.

Dr. Whapoe noted that the country is not poor, but it is only being poorly managed by those he called corrupt individuals.
