PARTIES IN LESTOHO COALITION AGREE ON ELECTORAL PACT FOR UPCOMING POLLS

MASERU, Parties in the outgoing Lesotho coalition government led by Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili’s Democratic Congress (DC) party and Deputy Prime Minister Mothetjoa Metsing’s Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD) and other coalition partners have entered into an electoral pact to vote for one another’s candidate in the upcoming legislative election on June 3.

The development comes as the announcement of candidates for 80 constituencies for the snap election got underway on Wednesday. The elections are being held almost three years early after the Mosisili-led coalition lost a vote of confidence in the National Assembly on March 1.

The three main partners in the coalition say they will jointly field one candidate per constituency so that all their supporters can vote together.

Lesotho uses a mixed-member proportional representation system.

The Spokesperson for the Democratic Congress, Serialong Qoo, said Wednesday: We sat together as the Executive Committee from DC, LCD, and other parties that are involved in the government.

“We separated in 2015, that is why we have the coalition government. So, we took the results for 2015, sat together and said if we can divide the constituency accordingly. we are going to win the election.
