SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT ADDS PROVINCIAL PREMIERS LOCAL GOVT BODY TO MINISTERIAL C’TEE ON MIGRATION
PRETORIA,- South African President Jacob Zuma has added the premiers of all nine provinces of the country and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) as members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration, which has been set up to focus on all aspects of migration, including South Africa’s migration policy and how various sectors can work with the government to promote orderly migration and good relations between citizens and nationals of other countries.
At a meeting of the President’s Co-ordinating Council held on March 10, a decision was taken to expand the membership of the committee to ensure co-ordination by all spheres of government and consequently, membership now includes the leadership of provincial and local government. The committee was established in 2015.
The name of the body has also been changed to the Inter-Governmental Committee on Migration and comprises Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Jeff Radebe as Chairperson; Minister of Home Affairs (Interior) Malusi Gigaba as Deputy Chairperson; Minister of Police Nathi Nhleko; Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga;
Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs David van Rooyen; Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula; Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi; Minister of Human Settlements Lindiwe Sisulu; Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane; Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Michael Masutha’ Minister of Small Business Development Lindiwe Zulu;
Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini; Minister of State Security David Mahlobo; Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Rob Davies; Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi; the premiers of the nine provinces; and the President of the South African Local Government Association, Parks Tau.
The Department of Home Affairs will lead the Technical Task Team of Directors-General for the inter-governmental commitee.
