Aspiring Parliamentary Candidate for Adaklu to set up Scholarship Fund

Madam Rebecca Agbogah, a Parliamentary Candidate for National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Adaklu Constituency says she would create an educational scholarship fund to help needy but brilliant students in the constituency when she becomes a Member of Parliament for Adaklu.

This, she said, would help provide the missing link in the current educational chain in the area.

Madam Agbogah who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said she would also implement women and youth empowerment programmes to make them economically vibrant.

She intimated that the people of Adaklu fought for the creation of the district to be used as a vehicle to promote the socio economic and political development of the people.

She noted that Mr Governs Kwame Agbodza, the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, had done quite well for the people in the areas of educational and health infrastructure.

‘But he also used the mandate given him by the people as a three term MP to develop himself politically and become a national asset for the NDC,’ she intimated.

Madam Agbogah said the time had therefore come for the people to give another person the opportunity to continue the development agenda of the area.

She continued that, ‘the constituency needs to raise multiple political stalwarts instead of putting all its eggs in one basket.’

Madam Agbogah said in doing so the constituency needed somebody who could work hand in hand with the current MP who she said would definitely occupy a higher position in the next NDC government.

She told the GNA that this would create the political synergy Adaklu needed to move to the next level.

‘Being a politically vibrant woman with a passion for community development, I believe I am best fit for that bill.

‘There are places where women can get better results than men,’ she said.

She assured us that if given the nod she would form a formidable working relationship with Mr Agbodza to champion the cause of Adaklu.

Madam Agbogah appealed to the delegates to vote for her as she would work hard to champion their cause.

The NDC Parliamentary primary in the Adaklu Constituency comes on at Adaklu Goefe on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

Inclusion Ghana advocates education system that embraces persons with intellectual disabilities

Inclusion Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation, is advocating equal opportunities for and inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in Ghana’s educational system.

It has, therefore, called for the elimination of factors denying such people access to education.

It wants stakeholders to work together to protect the inalienable rights of children with such conditions to education to collectively build an inclusive society.

Mr Kofi Tibuahson, the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Coordinator of Inclusion Ghana, said progress had been made through advocacy, but more could be done to address the exclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities from the education system.

He was speaking at a stakeholder’s evaluation meeting to assess a three-year project implemented in the Bekwai Municipality as part of an exit exercise in all beneficiary districts.

The project, dubbed: ‘Promoting Inclusion in Ghana from District to National,’ was implemented in six main districts and six other adjoining districts to raise awareness about the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities.

With funding from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) through the Danish Disability Fund, Parents Self-Help Groups (PSHGs) were formed at zonal and district levels.

The PSHGs, Mr. Tibuahson said, were empowered to mobilise resources to support their livelihoods to be able to take care of children with intellectual disabilities who were their dependants.

Other stakeholders such as heads of schools, teachers, assembly members, as well as duty bearers in the Local Government and Education Directorate, were also engaged as part of the project implementation.

The goal was to push for the inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities in all forms of social services, especially education.

Most of such children in the project districts, Mr Tibuahson noted, were developing the confidence and interest to participate in school and community activities, adding that parents who used to hide their children were also departing from those acts.

Madam Aba Oppong, the Executive Director of Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana, local partners of Inclusion Ghana, said the Sustainable Development Goal- Four ensured inclusive and equitable quality education and promoted lifelong learning opportunities for all.

She called on key duty bearers in health, education, and social protection to ensure all the policy requirements regarding those social services for persons with autism, cerebral palsy, and down syndrome were well taken care of.

‘They should be allowed into schools if their assessments require that they go to school, otherwise their parents and guardians should be supported to take care of them,’ she added.

Disability is not reason for illiteracy

The govenment of Cameroon, together with the Cameroon Baptist Convention health services say they are determined to make education available for all children living with disabilities.

“We are trying to teach teachers to have inclusive skills so they can attend to both children with disabilities and those without. We have equally donated equipments to the GCE board and to other schools,” Prof Tih Pius Mofe, Director of the CBC health service says.

“We have to think about putting in place strategies that will really transform our educational system. We have about 70 schools for inclusive education and we are working together with the Cameroon Baptist health service to give these children living with disabilities a chance at education just like other children,” Pauline Irene Nguene, Minister of social affairs adds.

“I have noticed that most of these children with disabilities are extremely smart and brilliant. We are calling on parents with children having disabilities to send their kids to school. We are trying our best to ensure that they become something in the society and are not forced to stay back at home while others get trained. It is not their making they were born the way they are. We love them too and want the best for them. I have a child with disability and I love him even three times more than the others. I make him feel extremely special. They need it. They get easily traumatized when they see other children doing what they cannot do,” Sophie Njie a CBC worker and a parent explains.

A campaign has been launched by the Ministry of Social Affairs together with the Cameroon Baptist Convention health services to step up the education of children with these disabilities. This campaign was launched in Yaounde this May 05, 2023. The Minister of social affairs, Pauline Irene Nguene says it is time to move from policy to action. She also urged every parent to send their disabled child to school or let them acquire skills.
