Kunyak: The Kericho County Government has initiated the construction of a Sh. 55 million Maternal and Child Health Unit at Kunyak Health Centre in Kipkelion West Sub-County. This project is aimed at enhancing access to quality maternal and child healthcare.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kericho County Governor Dr. Eric Mutai, who led the ground-breaking ceremony, emphasized that the project is designed to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by providing essential services closer to the residents. Governor Mutai expressed confidence that the Kunyak Comprehensive Mother and Child Unit will substantially improve healthcare accessibility and outcomes for mothers and children in the area.
The governor identified the region’s high maternal mortality rates as a consequence of poor terrain and inadequate facilities. He stated that the new unit is expected to address these longstanding health challenges, and the existing facility will also be renovated to enhance service delivery.
Dr. Mutai announced further plans to equip the health centre with modern equipment, hire additional healthcare personnel, maintain a steady supply of medicines, and construct a modern mortuary. He also urged the contractor to prioritize hiring local youth, recognizing their technical skills and the importance of empowering them economically.
Accompanying Dr. Mutai at the event were County Executive Committee Members David Ekuwam (Health), Jackson Rop (Finance), Magerer Langat (Agriculture), Brenda Bill Bii (Roads), along with other local leaders.
