Ouagadougou: The Delegation for Veterans and Former Military Personnel (DACAM) concluded the second edition of a memorial writing workshop aimed at former soldiers and veterans in Ouagadougou. The event, which took place from October 21 to October 24, 2025, focused on equipping participants with memory writing techniques to enlighten future generations.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the workshop was held under the theme “Writing to enlighten current and future generations.” Trainer Koba Aboubacar Dao highlighted the importance of veterans writing their memoirs to share their experiences with both current and future generations. He noted that memoir writing is not a common practice in Burkina Faso; however, by providing these skills, veterans might find it valuable to document their experiences.
The training sessions included both theoretical and practical components to ensure a comprehensive understanding of memoir writing. The workshop concluded with a ceremony where participants received training certificates. Partners such as FONA-DR and Editions IKS were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their contributions. Additionally, IKS Editions awarded publishing vouchers to two veterans who will start writing their memoirs soon.
Brigadier General Sidiki Daniel Traore expressed his satisfaction with the workshop, acknowledging the importance of documenting personal and national history. He emphasized that memoirs and autobiographies, while similar, differ in focus, with memoirs placing individual stories within a broader historical context. Traore encouraged his peers to write for future generations, emphasizing the role of storytelling in building a national heritage.
