Issaka Bonkoungou Releases ‘Alert’ to Inspire African Youth

Ouagadougou: Burkinabe diplomat Issaka Bonkoungou launched his new book, “Alert,” at a ceremony in Ouagadougou on Friday. The book, consisting of seven short stories, addresses critical issues affecting African youth, such as immigration, unemployment, xenophobia, injustice, and intellectual mimicry. With a foreword by Professor Serge Theophile Balima, the book aims to be a wake-up call for increased awareness and collective responsibility.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the author describes “Alert” as a heartfelt plea, urging both African youth and decision-makers to recognize the detrimental practices that hinder development and destabilize the continent. Bonkoungou emphasizes the potential for a new Africa, contingent on its youth believing in their capabilities and committing to a future of progress.

Drawing from his diplomatic career in Europe, Bonkoungou shares insights into the challenges faced by young Africans abroad, including drug abuse and behaviors contrary to traditional values. “I wanted to highlight the actions distancing us from progress. We can create our own paradise by working with conscientious and responsible leaders,” he stated.

Youssef Ouedraogo, who presented the work, commended “Alert” for its honest examination of contemporary African societal issues. He noted that Bonkoungou addresses these topics with clarity, encouraging readers to reflect rather than judge. Ouedraogo highlighted the author’s ability to question realities, reveal contradictions, and call for a collective awakening.

In the preface, Professor Serge Theophile Balima applauded “Alert” for its patriotic and philosophical themes. He noted that Bonkoungou’s work dismantles the myth of a utopian West and urges a revival of African pride. Balima regards the collection as a foundation for inspiring citizen consciousness and action.

Published by Editions Mercury, “Alert” spans 133 pages and retails for 5,000 FCFA in local bookstores. The book’s launch ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamogo Jean Marie Traore.
