Kourweogo High Commissioner Leads Monitoring Tour to Boost Agropastoral Production

Kourweogo: The High Commissioner of the Kourweogo province, Mahamadi Congo, along with the provincial directorate responsible for Agriculture, embarked on a monitoring tour of four agropastoral and rice-growing sites located in the communes of Sourgoubila, Laye, and Bousse. This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts related to the 2025-2026 agropastoral and fisheries offensive.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the High Commissioner Mahamadi Congo stated that the mission aimed to assess the working conditions of producers and highlight the agricultural and pastoral potential within the province. The tour’s first stop was the NOOMA agropastoral farm located in Mecko, Sanon (Sourgoubila). Established in 2022 and managed by Salif Soudre, the farm spans 2.5 hectares and provides employment for five individuals. The farm integrates crops and livestock, featuring tangelo, sweet bananas, fish farming, and quail farming. Projections for 2031 estimate a production of 91 tonnes of tangelo and 19 tonnes of banana, with a turnover exceeding 17 million CFA francs.

In Laye, the delegation visited two sites. The first was the rice-growing lowland of the Songui-Koaba cooperative in Tampelga, developed in 2011, covering 30 hectares and cultivated by 264 producers, including 182 women. Utilizing the TS2 variety, the expected yield is 3.5 tonnes per hectare, translating to a total production of 105 tonnes and a forecast turnover of 17.55 million CFA francs. Another site was Thomas Sama’s Sahel agropastoral farm, founded in 2023, focusing on poultry farming with 3,000 Isa Brown laying hens housed in a 600 m² henhouse. The laying phase is scheduled to begin in December 2025, with an anticipated turnover exceeding 111 million CFA francs.

The tour concluded in Seleghin (Bousse) on the rice-growing lowland of the Songre-Lapanga cooperative, developed in 2025 with backing from the emergency territorial development and resilience project (PUDTR). On a 31-hectare plot, 450 farmers, including 249 women, cultivate the TS2 variety. The projected yield is 3.8 tonnes per hectare, resulting in a production of 117.8 tonnes and an estimated turnover of 17.67 million CFA francs. The technical briefs presented emphasized the support from the State and partners under the agro-pastoral and fishing offensive. However, challenges persist, notably the need for equipment, water points, and access routes for certain sites.

Throughout the tour, the delegation motivated producers and offered advice to enhance yields and facilitate the sale of production. The High Commissioner urged stakeholders, particularly young individuals, to become more engaged in the agricultural and pastoral sectors, emphasizing that such involvement would ensure food sovereignty for Kourweogo.
