Babadjou: prayer scamming operation goes rough

By Stephen TADAHA

A lady has been arrested and detained by elements of the National Gendarmerie in Babadjou subdivision in the West after her prayer scamming operations were foiled on two occasions.

The lady and her accomplice, a man who is reportedly on the run approach their victims pretending to be workers of a Non Governmental Organization for peace and then ask for the location of a supposed center for peace in the area.

The lady whose name has not been revealed, then proceeds with prayers claiming she is rewarding her future victims for their kindness.

A lady, Matho Bryanne, who luckily survived the prayer scamming operation this February 13 says she almost fell into the trap when the lady, during the fake prayer session, began revealing strange things saying her life is at risk.

‘I was approached by the lady, well dressed who politely told me she was in search of a peace center in the locality. When I told her I don’t know any of such centers here, a man just came from behind and claimed he knew t
he so called center and that he would go show her the centre,’ Bryanne told us.

‘The lady began appreciating me for my kindness and said in reward, she would pray for me. Something I accepted without hesitating. During the prayer she began telling me that my life is in danger and that some of my family members want to kill me,’ Bryanne added.

The fake woman of God together with her accomplice went further to tell the lady that the money she has at home needs prayers for it contains bad bank notes.

‘She asked me to go home and take the money I have, with a bit of oil and salt so that she prays on it in order to shatter the ‘possessed’ bank notes. I agreed and went back home but did not return because I felt they were scammer,’ Bryanne said.

Bryanne then alerted her family members and security forces resulting to a manhunt which led to the lady’s arrest. Her accomplice on his part succeeded to escape.

Another person, a bike rider also confessed he nearly got duped by the couple when he was also approached
this same day.

Mr Bryan Acheampong, Minister for Food and Agriculture, has urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly members to prioritize internal revenue mobilization efforts to generate the needed financial resources for development.

They should put a premium on maximizing their internally generated funds to help them provide development projects and programmes, which would improve the living conditions of their people.

Mr Acheampong made the call at the inauguration of the reconstituted Afigya-Kwabre North District Assembly at Boaman in the Ashanti region.

In all, 15 elected assembly members, seven government appointees and 75 unit committee members, were sworn in to execute their official mandates at the Assembly.

The swearing-in was officiated by the Offinso Circuit Court Judge, Mr Paul Oduro.

Mr Acheampong pointed out the need for the Assembly members to consider their election as an honour to serve the nation.

They should therefore collaborate with all stakeholders and interested parties in the disch
arge of their duties.

This was the path to attract the people to participate fully in the implementation of projects, understanding government policies and giving their all to nation building.

Malawian President says Ayorkor Botchwey Candidature well received

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera says the candidacy of Ghana’s foreign minister, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, for Commonwealth Secretary-General has been ‘well-received’.

President Chakwera, whose country is a member of the Commonwealth, received Madam Botchwey at the presidential palace in the capital, Lilongwe on Monday, and discussed bilateral issues.

This include the foreign minister’s Commonwealth candidature.

He told Madam Botchwey: ‘Malawi welcomes your candidature. It shows President Akufo-Addo has confidence in your skill and competence.’

The foreign minister’s candidacy was formally announced last Friday in Ghana. It has received bipartisan support in the country’s often fractious parliament.

A new Commonwealth Secretary-General will replace Baroness Patricia Scotland when Heads of Government of the 56-member organisation meet in October in Samoa. Her final term expires at the end of 2024.

The new leader will come from Africa, as agreed at the last meeting of Heads of Government in Kigal
i in 2022. There are 21 African countries in the Commonwealth, which has a combined annual economic output of more than US$13 trillion, and a population in excess of 2.6 billion people.

Madam Botchwey shared her vision for ‘a new Commonwealth,’ including a focus on trade and investment; harnessing ICT for skills, innovation and start-ups to provide jobs for young people, and a migration compact to respond to demand across the Commonwealth and stem the tide of illegal and perilous migration.

She also outlined her vision on addressing climate change, saying it was a threat to all member states, not least small island developing states, and called for a strong Commonwealth voice for the concerted action needed to save the planet for future generations.

President Chakwera responded saying he appreciated Ms. Botchwey’s overall focus, and on trade and investments and young people in particular.

Meanwhile, Malawi has granted visa-free entry to Ghanaians, an initiative Ms. Botchwey said would be reciprocated.
