Kericho: The government, through the Ministry of Education, is undertaking significant reforms in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector by modularizing the curriculum. This initiative aims to enhance the flexibility and accessibility of TVET programmes, allowing learners to acquire targeted skills in shorter, more manageable learning units.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kericho Technical, Vocational Education and Training College Principal Shadrack Tonui emphasized that the new curriculum is set to transform the lives of many youths in Kericho and beyond by providing necessary technical skills. ‘The modularized approach allows learners to specialize in areas of interest, receive certificates for completed modules, and potentially enter the workforce sooner. This curriculum will also provide a pathway for further learning and career advancement,’ Tonui added.
Tonui, who also serves as National Secretary General for all the TVETs in the country, expressed gratitude to the government for its steadfast and continued support, particularly in designing a modularized curriculum to skill the youths. He highlighted the shift from a theory-based system to the new modular approach through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET-CDACC), which has revolutionized training and assessment in TVET schools.
‘This is a learner-friendly system of education, unlike the one we had in the past that was a teacher-centered system,’ Tonui noted. He further revealed that Kericho TVET has gained momentum in its training and has significantly enrolled students in various technical programmes. ‘We now have 3,508 students and we are happy that the Kericho TVET is preferred because of its outstanding performance. The percentage pass has normally been constant at 74.6 which shows that we are at an excellent level,’ Tonui stressed.
TVET-CDACC is an external examination body for TVET that serves as a body corporate established under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act. It is responsible for designing and developing curricula, assessing examinations, and certifying competence in TVET.
