Lesotho’s Human Rights Record Set for Examination by UN Review Panel

Geneva: The human rights record of Lesotho will be examined by the United Nations Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group for the fourth time on Wednesday, 30 April 2025, in a meeting in Geneva that will be webcast live. This session marks a critical point for Lesotho as it presents an opportunity for assessing the progress made since the last review in January 2020. According to African Press Organization, Lesotho is among 14 States to be reviewed by the UPR Working Group during its session from 28 April to 9 May 2025. Previously, Lesotho underwent its first review in May 2010, followed by subsequent reviews in January 2015 and January 2020. The UPR Working Group consists of the 47 Member States of the Human Rights Council, but all 193 UN Member States can participate in any country's review. The upcoming review, scheduled from 14:30 to 18:00 on Wednesday, 30 April 2025 (GMT+2), is part of the ongoing fourth UPR cycle. In this cycle, States are prompted to outline the steps tak en to implement past recommendations and to highlight recent human rights developments. Leading the Lesotho delegation will be Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi, the Minister of Law and Justice. The review process will be facilitated by three country representatives serving as rapporteurs, also known as the troika, which for Lesotho includes Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa. This session will be accessible to the public via a live webcast at https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1y/k1ypkwnawz>, with a list of speakers and statements to be made available on the UPR Extranet. The UPR Working Group is expected to adopt the recommendations for Lesotho on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, between 15:30 and 18:00 (GMT+2). During this time, Lesotho may express its stance on the recommendations it received during the review.
