Maseru: The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), through its Sub-regional Office for North Africa (SRO-NA) and Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa, collaborated with Lesotho's Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to host a pivotal workshop aimed at harnessing the potential of the Basotho diaspora for the nation's sustainable development. The workshop took place in Maseru, Lesotho, on Thursday, 15 May. According to African Press Organization, the mission was designed to engage key stakeholders and integrate remittances into the country's national development strategies. It also explored various avenues for channeling diaspora savings into investments that could boost sustainable development. A significant outcome of the workshop was the formation of a national technical working group tasked with guiding the program's implementation. The event saw participation from 55 representatives from various sectors, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Minis try of Finance and Development Planning, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Central Bank of Lesotho, and other key ministries such as Trade and Industry and Home Affairs. In addition, the United Nations System in Lesotho, represented by the RCO, IOM, and UNDP, along with academia, the private sector, diaspora associations, civil society, and the banking sector, were actively involved. Concluding the workshop, participants agreed to set up a national technical working group (NTWG) under the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. This group will build on an existing migration group and include more relevant stakeholders to optimize the utilization of remittances in Lesotho's development agenda.
