Nyamira County’s Department of Children Services Disburses Over Sh 2.7 Million in Presidential Bursaries


Nyamira: The Department of Children Services in Nyamira County has successfully disbursed presidential bursaries totaling over Sh 2.7 million to 218 needy and vulnerable children enrolled in various secondary schools.



According to Kenya News Agency, Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Florence Obunga presided over the disbursement ceremony of the bursary cheques to beneficiaries from the West Mugirango constituency. She encouraged the students to work diligently in school to achieve good academic results. Obunga noted the overwhelming number of applications received from needy families, emphasizing that the selection process was rigorous to ensure only the most deserving students were awarded.



Obunga expressed gratitude to the selection committee for their dedication and meticulous efforts in visiting applicants’ homes to ensure the bursary reached those truly in need. The bursary aims to support students financially, enabling them to focus on their studies without the burden of tuition fees.



Faith Kiprono, the area Sub County Director of Education, urged the beneficiaries to maintain discipline and high standards both at school and home. She emphasized the transformative power of education in altering the socio-economic status of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, motivating them to strive for exemplary grades.



Sub County Children Officer Mr. Billy Adera reminded parents of their responsibility to cover any remaining fees and provide necessary personal items for their children’s education. He stressed the importance of submitting termly assessment reports to monitor the students’ academic progress, ensuring the government’s investment yields positive outcomes.



DCC Obunga also announced plans for a mentorship program during half-term breaks and long holidays for bursary beneficiaries. The program will focus on career guidance, leadership skills, and role modeling to nurture confident and articulate individuals.



Beneficiaries attending day secondary schools received Sh15,000 each, while those in boarding schools were awarded Sh25,000 each.
